These training courses have been designed and developed to fulfill the training requirements of personnel working within the different areas of hazardous materials handling.

Each course meets or exceeds the recommendations of OSHA 29 CFR 1910.120. In addition both NFPA 471 and 472 standards are made part of the courses when applicable.

All courses include both classroom and hands on instruction.
 

First Responder Operations

First Responder Awareness

 
First Responders at the operations level are personnel who are involved in an initial response for the purpose of protecting people, property and the environment from hazardous substances. The FRO are trained to respond defensively, instead of actually trying to stop the release at the source. Northwest HazMat, Inc. training includes:
  • Knowledge of basic hazard and risk assessment techniques
  • Ability to select and use the proper PPE
  • Understanding basic hazardous material terms.
  • Ability to perform basic control, containment and/or confinement operations
  • Ability to implement basic decontamination procedures.
  • Understanding relevant standard operations procedures and termination procedures.

Cost: $90.00 Per person
Instruction Time: 8 hours

First Responders at the awareness level are personnel who are likely to discover or witness a hazardous substance emergency. NorthWest HazMat, Inc. training class covers:
  • Understand what hazardous materials are and their risks
  • Understanding the potential outcomes associated with Hazmat
  • Ability to recognize hazardous materials present in an emergency
  • Ability to identify hazardous materials involved in an emergency
  • Understand the role of the FRA in the employer's emergency plan including security
  • Ability to use the DOT Emergency Response Guidebook
  • Ability to realize that additional resources are needed for the response and to make appropriate notifications

Hazmat Technicians

Occasional Site Workers are those or whose job responsibilities place them at a site only on an occasional basis and whose potential exposure is below the permissible exposure limit. Northwest HazMat, Inc. provides training that addresses the OSW. The material presented parallels the technician level training and includes:

  • Code of Federal Regulations (CFR)
  • Personnel Protective Equipment including SCBA's*

Hazardous Materials technicians are personnel who respond to an emergency in order to stop or prevent a release of hazardous substances. These people assume an offensive response role as they approach the point of release with the intent to stop the release at the source. Northwest HazMat, Inc. provides the training that will allow the student to demonstrate their ability and show competence in the following areas:

  • Knowledge required implementing the employer's Emergency Response Plan (ERP)
  • Knowledge in the use of field survey instruments and equipment to identify, classify, and verify known and unknown materials
  • Ability to function with in an assigned role in the IC system
  • Knowledge required to select and use the proper PPE
  • Understanding of hazard and risk assessment techniques
  • Ability to perform advanced control containment and/or confinement operations
  • Ability to understand and implement decontamination procedures
  • Understand the termination process
  • Understanding of basic chemical and toxicological terminology and behavior
 

General Site Worker

 

The general site worker denotes those who are generally at the site where cleanup operations take place and whose job responsibilities place them in possible contact with hazardous waste above the permissible exposure limits (PEL) established by OSHA. Northwest HazMat, Inc. presents the 40 hour Hazwoper/General Site Worker. This course meets or exceeds the training requirements for OSHA's 29CFR1910.120. Forty Hours of Comprehensive Training Incorporates both classroom with hands on training.

Crime Scene Clean up Training

Contractors or individuals interested in providing clean-up services for crime, trauma or suicide scenes should consider our training program. This program is designed to give the CTS worker the information they need to complete a clean-up thoroughly and safely.

Clandestine Drug Lab Safety for Emergency Responders

This class is designed to give the emergency responder (police, fire medical, social workers, ets.) a detailed overview of the real world of clandestine drug labs and the associated hazards. Case studies are reviewed and drug lab equipment is displayed which adds a vital component to the class and shows the student what to expect at an illegal drug lab. The instructor, a veteran of hundreds of drug lab responses, brings a realistic perspective to the class.

Tank Rollover Training

 

If you respond to traffic accidents, one day you will respond to a tank truck overturned. Is your team trained to handle such an incident? NorthWest HazMat, Inc. can provide training to handle this type of response. Our 4 Hour Basic Responder is for initial responders and to assist more advanced response personnel.

The Eight Hour Advanced Responder covers all aspects
of rollover response including:

Using Lid Tight® Dome Clamps, and includes hands on training using our tank truck simulator and vapor recovery pump system. This class is presented by veteran hazmat responders and experienced tank truck operators.
