Hazardous Materials technicians are personnel who respond to an emergency in order to stop or prevent a release of hazardous substances. These people assume an offensive response role as they approach the point of release with the intent to stop the release at the source. Northwest HazMat provides the training that will allow the student to demonstrate their ability and show competence in the following areas:

HAZMAT TECHNICIAN TRAINING OVERVIEW
- Knowledge required implementing the employer’s Emergency Response Plan (ERP)
- Knowledge in the use of field survey instruments and equipment to identify, classify, and verify known and unknown materials
- Ability to function within an assigned role in the IC system
- Knowledge required to select and use the proper PPE
- Understanding of hazard and risk assessment techniques
- Ability to perform advanced control containment and/or confinement operations
- Ability to understand and implement decontamination procedures
- Understand the termination process
- Understanding of basic chemical and toxicological terminology and behavior

Each course meets or exceeds the recommendations of OSHA 29 CFR 1910.120. In addition both NFPA 471 and 472 standards are made part of the courses when applicable.
All courses include both classroom and hands on instruction.
