Building a Spill Response Plan: Equipment Checklist for Oregon Businesses

Building a Spill Response Plan: Equipment Checklist for Oregon Businesses

If your Oregon business stores, transports, or uses hazardous materials, you're legally required to have a spill prevention and response plan. But beyond compliance, a well-prepared response plan with the right equipment can prevent a minor spill from becoming a major environmental incident — and a major financial headache.

Oregon DEQ Requirements You Need to Know

The Oregon Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) requires businesses to report spills of hazardous materials that reach or threaten waterways, soil, or public areas. Penalties for non-compliance can reach tens of thousands of dollars per violation. Having proper equipment on-site demonstrates due diligence and can significantly reduce your liability.

Your Essential Equipment Checklist

Here's what every hazmat-ready facility should have on hand:

Spill Containment Kits — At minimum, one kit per storage area. Our 5 Gallon Spill Kit Bucket is a ready-to-deploy solution that includes absorbent pads, pillows, socks, and disposal bags. For larger containment, the Pop-Up Pool Catch Basin (100 Gallon) can handle significant spills and runoff.

Sealing & Patching — Keep Plug N' Dike on hand for quick-sealing leaks in tanks, drums, and pipes. Pair with 2178 Clamps for securing temporary repairs on damaged lines.

Personal Protective Equipment — Minimum Level D PPE (coveralls, safety glasses, hard hat, chemical-resistant gloves) should be stored alongside every spill kit. For higher-risk materials, Level C PPE with respiratory protection is required.

Secondary Containment — Drip pans, containment pallets, and berms for chemical storage areas are essential for preventing spills from reaching drains or soil.

Training Your Team Makes the Difference

Equipment is only as effective as the people using it. OSHA requires that employees who may respond to hazmat spills receive proper training. Our HAZWOPER 40-Hour course covers spill response procedures in depth. For ongoing team practice, our Tank Truck Rollover Simulator provides realistic training scenarios, and the Accessory Pack expands the range of drills your team can run.

Don't Wait for a Spill to Get Prepared

The best time to prepare for a spill is before it happens. Review your current equipment inventory, replace expired materials, and make sure every employee knows where kits are located and how to use them.
